As I’m sure you know, this week the Prime Minister announced that, subject to a final decision next week, the final stage of lifting of lockdown restrictions will take place on July 19th. I know people will have very mixed views on and feelings about this — I do myself. On the one hand I am extremely glad to see that the ban on singing in church will come to an end. On the other hand I know many people are anxious about this move, and fear that it is a huge mistake.
Our priority, as a worshipping community, must be to ensure that people feel welcomed and safe in church, whether we ourselves are longing to throw away our masks or are worried about the consequences of unlocking. We need to bear with each other, and to recognise that this time of transition will make demands on our patience. Now, more than ever, we are called to cultivate loving-kindness towards each other.
The Standing Committee will be meeting next week to discuss a plan for gradually moving towards ‘unlocking’, the resumption of singing and the rest of our common life. I am also waiting for guidance from the Church of England and/or the Archbishop. Once we have a plan the details will be in the e-News. But please do be assured that we will do our best to ensure that everyone feels safe as we move, cautiously, towards ‘normality’.
