Ash Wednesday 18th February

10am and 6.30pm Holy Communion, with ashing. We begin Lent by receiving a cross of ashes on our foreheads as a sign of repentance. Lent is our time for turning our lives back to God and growing in holiness.

Stations of the Cross

Every Wednesday at 12pm (from 24th February) we follow Jesus’s journey to the Cross, with meditations and prayers.

Lent Lunches

Every Thursday at 12.30pm we share a simple lunch and then hear a talk about the things that Jesus carried on the way to the Cross. (19th February in the Mark Kirby Hall, other weeks in the Arlington Hall.)

Palm Sunday (Sunday 29th March)

9.45am Meet at Cottingham Market Green blessing of palms and procession (with donkey!) to church for our Palm Sunday service.

6.30pm Evensong

12pm Holy Week Meditation: a quiet service for the Monday of Holy Week.

Holy Tuesday (Tuesday 31st March)

6.30pm Reflective Communion. A quiet service to still the heart and soul.

Holy Wednesday (Wednesday 1st April)

6.30pm Tenebrae. This is a quiet and atmospheric service journeying through Jesus’s last night and day. The name means ‘shadows’ and it’s a series of six readings and music with a candle being snuffed out at the end of each, to leave the church in darkness. 

Maundy Thursday (Thursday 2nd April)

11.30am Stations of the Cross. We retrace Jesus’s last journey as we follow the 14 pictures of the Stations around the church.

8pm Eucharist of the Last Supper. In this service we recall Jesus’s last night, his last meal, and the way he served his friends by washing their feet – except that I will wash hands instead of feet, as so many people hate having their feet on show or touched. At the end of this service the altars are stripped of their hangings so the church is left bare. Then we will keep a prayerful watch until 10pm.

Good Friday (3rd April)

10.30-12pm Good Friday Family Activities in the Arlington Hall. Activities for everyone to join in, storytelling, and hot cross buns or Easter biscuits.

2pm: Liturgy of Good Friday. Reading of the Passion and Proclamation of the Cross. This is a solemn service for this most important of days, which begins and ends in quietness.

Easter Eve (Saturday 4th April)

7pm Easter Vigil. The new day begins at sunset after Holy Saturday, the day of waiting. We light the new fire outside the church, and bring the new light in as we proclaim that Christ is risen, in readings and music. Ends with communion. This is a very beautiful service – the first of Easter

Easter Day (Sunday 5th April)

8am BCP Holy Communion. Traditional quiet communion service.

10am Easter Communion. We celebrate Christ’s glorious resurrection in a communion service with a party atmosphere.

4pm Family Service: Alleluia! Jesus is Alive!

6.30pm Evensong. A special Choral Evensong for Easter Day.
