Thinking about generosity

Posted on May 24, 2022

I’ve been thinking a lot about generosity this week. Now that there are only two weeks left to our Jubilee Fete it is very exciting to see the arrangements coming together, and I have been bowled over by people’s generosity in offering help and support. Here are a few of the offers of help we have had so far:

Cottingham Co-op are donating scones and buns
Our Mothers’ Union members will prepare and serve cream teas
The Hull NHS choir will perform
The churchyard will be decorated with bunting made by Hallgate and Westfield schools
So many people have volunteered to do stalls and games, including the Scouts and Cubs and the Methodist Church
Rob Nicklas will provide a sound system and some music
Ian Booth will run a teddy zip wire — and these are just a few of the generous offers of help we’ve had.

Behind the scenes there has been a huge amount of organising going on by the fete organising team and I am hoping that it will be a very worthwhile and really enjoyable day for all. I am donating the ingredients for Pimms and fruit punch so that everyone can enjoy a well-deserved drink as we finish off the afternoon with ‘Hymns and Pimms’. Seeing how people are offering their time and energy so generously has been wonderful.

This coming week we will be holding our Annual Meeting on Wednesday. This is where we elect our churchwardens and PCC, take stock of the year just gone and start to plan for the year to come. It’s an important meeting for us – please do try to come if you can.

The following day is Ascension Day, the culmination of the Easter Season, when we celebrate Jesus’s farewell to the disciples – until he comes again – and start to anticipate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. We’ll be having two services, in the morning and the evening. Our neighbouring parish of St Alban’s will be joining us in the evening, and Fr Graham Thornalley will be presiding. I’m really looking forward to this join celebration, and I hope to see you there.

with my prayers and blessings, Nicola
