Pause for thought

Posted on February 14, 2023

Pause for Thought by Revd Nicola Bown, Radio Humberside, 14th February.

Today is Valentine’s day, a day when lots of people will be talking about love. And everyone knows what love is — or do we? Sometimes we can be better at talking about love than at actually doing it.

St Paul wrote one of the most famous definitions of love, one that people often have at their wedding. But he was writing to a group of people who knew a lot about love – they could talk the talk – but weren’t very good at doing it. They couldn’t walk the walk.

He said: love never gives up, it cares more for other people than for self. It isn’t always me first. It doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. It doesn’t keep score, it doesn’t look back. It always looks for the best, and keeps going to the end.

Love isn’t just how we feel, love is what we do. It’s the walk that counts – with a partner, with our family, our friends, our neighbours. Whatever your Valentine’s day holds, may you walk this day the walk of love.
