The APCM

Posted on April 26, 2024

It’s now only three weeks to our annual meeting, the APCM, which will be held after the 10am service on Sunday 19th May. One of the most important things we do at the APCM is elect people to our church council, the PCC. This year we have three spaces on the PCC (plus another one for someone who would like to represent us at the Deanery Synod – roughly, a meeting of all the churches in the Hull area).

What does the PCC do? We meet around six times a year for a couple of hours. As St Mary’s is a registered charity, all members of the PCC are trustees. They are responsible for overseeing our finances and making sure that we are properly run, for overseeing safeguarding, safety procedures, and the maintenance of our church building. But there’s more to life on the PCC than these things, important though they are. What is our vision as a church? How can we reach out to and serve our community? How can we grow in generosity? How can we make our church building welcoming for generations to come? How can we deepen our prayer and worshipping life? How can we build relationships with schools? All these and more have been discussed by the PCC this year — because the PCC plays a vital part in working with me to help the church grow and develop.  The next year will be an exciting time as our plans for our proposed reordering of the church come into focus, and we move onto the public consultation and grant application phases of the project.

Could you be part of this? Anyone who’s been on the electoral roll for six months can stand for the PCC — and that’s the only qualification. To make the PCC work really well, we need people from all walks of life. We need people who’ve been in the church a long time and people who’ve recently found a faith or come to worship at St Mary’s. We need old and young, men and women. In short, we need you.

with my prayers and blessings, Nicola

PS Our PCC meetings are nothing like those in the cartoon!
